I was going to write a whole intro in the Spartacus vocal style, but I’m pretty lazy, gratitude for understanding.
The series Spartacus ended last Friday and it was pretty awesome. For the last four years Spartacus has been a hidden gem on the Starz network, a story of intrigue and treachery wrapped in an orgy of blood and boobs (and actual orgies). The first two seasons used to stream on Netflix and that was awesome, then Starz and Netflix had a falling out and the last two seasons have been hard to see, which is terrible. That said! You should check out this show if you haven’t already, especially the first two seasons, Blood and Sand and Gods of the Arena. John Hannah (the cowardly brother from the Mummy movies) and Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) are so great in those shows, as are the various gladiators (big ups to my boy Crixus!)
I could go on quite a bit about why this is an awesome series on so many levels but I don’t want to write forever. I’ll just say that in my opinion it belongs in the conversation with other important cable shows. Maybe not the Wire, but certainly less HBO series like Deadwood or Rome (heck, it’s basically a prequel to Rome).
So many parenthesis. Apologies! Have you seen Spartacus? What did you think of the finale? Are you excited about the possiblity of a Julius Caesar spin-off? WE WILL HAVE WORDS.April 15, 2013 at 8:19 pm #84819
I freaking LOVE Spartacus. I watched Blood and Sand but hadn’t seen Gods of the Arena until this weekend when I watched all 6 episodes! The treachery, profanity and nudity is perfectly wrapped up in a 54 minute story line. I’ve had to keep myself from yelling “Jupiter’s cock!” any time something goes wrong. I’m looking forward to season 3 which I’ll be streaming on Starz thanks to getting a password from someone The secondary story lines are just as intriguing as the major ones. I also like that it is fast-paced, meaning if you miss one episode you’re actually going to miss something instead of going soap opera pace. The blood and gore effects are over the top 300 style but I like that soooo…yeah I’m with you. I recommend the show but BE WARNED: just about every episode has gratuitous nudity (including male and female full frontal), sex (hetero, homosexual and multi-partner) violence and profanity. Also, lots of talk of assaulting the behinds of men because apparently back in the day anytime a man felt insulted he had to relate his anger in terms of anal rape. Assuming the writers took creative license with that. Read through my post and now thinking maybe I shouldn’t tell people I like it lol.April 15, 2013 at 10:06 pm #84832
The mathematical formula for Spartacus is: (Prime Time Pay Cable Drama + Late Night Skinemax Show) x The 300.
This is a “mature” show, I think it was originally shown at midnight, and it has all the pre-show warning labels that made me giggle with glee when I was 13 years old, Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Strong Sexual Content. If you’re complaining about the sex and violence in Game of Thrones, please don’t watch Spartacus, because in comparison there ISN’T any sex or violence in GoT.
LiciaCee be warned that the third season is weird because they had to change actors for Spartacus because Andy Whitfield died of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma after the first season. The guy who took over, Liam McIntyre, is ok but he’s no replacement for Whitfield. This can be a bit disconcerting, so be warned!
Also I love the Gods of the Arena season, if you’re ever really drunk please trying singing “my cock rages on,” the greatest drunk song ever!April 18, 2013 at 1:21 am #85322
It is in fact the best soft core porn that has ever been made. No, seriously. I mean that as a compliment. I love it. LOVE THIS SHOW. Oh sure, there are issues of justice, historical characters, etc. It’s just plain fun. It’s like a natural stimulant for your brain. It just hits every dopamine, adrenaline, serotonin trigger in your brain. It’s fun.
