So as I’ve traveled the interwebs looking for magic and awesome I ran into a few sites talking about a supposedly amazing short film called “The Strange Thing About the Johnsons.” It stars an all Black cast and the plot is something I don’t think I’ve ever heard of in another movie. Ever. It’s about a son molesting his father. I sit here after watching this and I don’t have words. I’ll put a #TriggerWarning here because I don’t want to surprise anyone who has been the victim of sexual abuse…but…holy crap. I’m speechless. I’m never speechless. I write speeches on being speechless and at the moment?
I got nothing.
Watch. If you dare. And if you dare for the love of Zeus please leave a comment and tell me what you think…

So treating kids like animals seems to be what’s hot in the streets now a days. A story recently surfaced of a 5 year old who was handcuffed and taken in for psychiatric evaluation. So obviously this kid must have stabbed someone right? Right?
Gray says Michael was agitated when the officer entered the room, and the whole meeting ended with Michael arrested and cuffed, with zip ties on his hands and his feet.
“I was led to believe that Michael saw a police officer and attacked a police officer on sight,” said Gray, adding that that’s not what happened. She knows because she ultimately obtained a copy of the police report.
In it, the officer, Lt. Frank Gordo, says he placed his hand on Michael’s and, “the boy pushed my hand away in a batting motion, pushed papers off the table, and kicked me in the right knee.” When Michael wouldn’t calm down, Gordo cuffed Michael’s hands and feet with zip ties and took the boy to the Stockton Kaiser Psychiatric Hospital in the back of a squad car.
So apparently–a grown police officer got kicked in the knee by a 5 year old and decided it was time to handcuff the kid. I mean, what other choice would he have really? This kid is a MENACE. Being all 5 years old and weighing like a hot 40-50 pounds. This kid needed to be taken down. Good thing the police was there to help out. Don’t they make cages for 5 year olds? He should have totally put this kid in a cage. You know. Just for safety purposes.

Tulane’s Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry took over the hosting duties for Rachel Maddow on Wednesday, November 23rd 2011 and covered the immigration craziness that’s occurred in Alabama. During her coverage she quoted my recent Colorlines article on the subject. I was honored and pleased to have it on national television. (Read: I giggled then blushed then giggled some more.) Check out the clip below.
Recently I was invited to be a part of a delegation of labor leaders heading down to Alabama to speak out against one of the worst immigration laws in the country. I found it interesting, because the trip was billed as a “black” labor leader delegation. I’ve heard a lot about the black-brown discussion over immigrant rights, so I was ecstatic that this delegation of specifically black folks was going down to witness this law’s impact first hand. As a commentator on race and blackness, I felt it important that I join. Although there are those within the community who aren’t supportive, there are many who are absolutely against the prejudice that we’ve seen popping up across the country this past year, under the guise of “saving American jobs.”

This was the scene at UC Davis when police arrived to deal with some occupiers. That spray? Oh, that’s pepper spray. Sometimes when people are peacefully protesting you gotta pepper spray them. You know, to let them know that their still alive. Agree with the the Occupy Movement or not–the police across the country have acted terribly in dealing with them. It seems if the government doesn’t like what you’re doing your prone to being attacked, pepper sprayed or whatever feels right at the moment.
UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza said officers used force out of concern for their own safety after they were surrounded by students.
“If you look at the video you are going to see that there were 200 people in that quad,” said Chief Spicuzza. “Hindsight is 20-20 and based on the situation we were sitting in, ultimately that was the decision that was made.”
Right. That cop looks TERRIFIED. He can barely strut while pepper spraying those folks. I SEE FEAR IN HIS EYES.
After reading about the crackdown by Mayor Bloomberg on Occupy Wall St. I was left wondering one major thing. What is the point of all this and should OWS even be bothered anymore? I know the list of demands that the movement has brought forward, even though the media in mass ignores them. Taking over a public park has changed the national conversation from austerity measures to job plans. This seemingly herculean task has made a massive difference in what is happening in Washington and across the nation. As multiple cities protest have mirrored the efforts of OWS we are seeing politicians trying to co-opt the 99% movement, while others foolishly mock it. So the apparent next issue is whether or not OWS will be allowed to stay in Zuccoti Park, and I am not sure that this matter at all. Frankly, I think its time they left.
