BET Co-Founder Sheila Johnson and the Art of STFU…

» 11 January 2011 »

Imma need Sheila Johnson the co-founder of Black Embarrassment Entertainment Television to go sit over —–>.

Johnson speaking with NPR this past weekend offered her “expert” advice to Oprah Winfrey (yeah that Oprah Winfrey) and her brand new television network OWN which she says lacks diversity:

“The only advice that I say, let’s open up your circle a little bit more. You know, we love the Dr. Phils. We love the Suze Ormans. Let’s open up. There are other people. And there’s also African-American experts out there that I think she should start bringing on her show that can reach even a wider audience.”

Host Michel Martin said, “And it’s true that there doesn’t appear to be a great deal of ethnic diversity in her programming at this point, which is puzzling to some people.”

“No. Yes,” replied Johnson. “And I think she really should do that and not be afraid to do it. There’s really a lot of great experts out there that really know the businesses at hand. And I’d like to see her open up her circle to do that.”

I hereby direct Sheila Johnson to refrain from talking smack about Oprah’s new channel OWN.  Johnson who famously sold BET to Viacom to ensure that our afternoons are filled with _________ (fill in the blank I have no idea what comes on BET anymore because the coonery that passes for television caused me to give up on it long ago) that will allow millions of minority youth and curious white people to become educated by the latest incarnation of Soulja Boy Swag.  Or something.

So from us here at This Week In Blackness we say to you Sheila Johnson lay off Lady O and STFU (please.  I’m being nice this time).

Thank you. I would consider her conversation if that foolishness that she passes off as a channel was actually worth something. The ONLY thing I viewed on that channel in 2010 was Black Girls Rock. I am NOT exaggerating. That was the only time I entered the numbers into the Comcast remote for that channel.

Oprah loves people, not just Black people. She has done wonders for people of many cultures and for women. She is not God nor anyone’s savior. She is not responsible for fully staffing her company with a 100% Black staff. In case the likes of BET and anyone who agrees with them aren’t aware of this, the word diversity does not imply Black. It implies variety. This would be gender, race, class, sexual orientation and more.

Thus far, OWN has had quality programming that in the social media world appears to resonate with many Black women and women of other races. Until BET provides quality programming, I’ll also need them to STFU. I cannot think of a thing that annoyed me more this week.
