Dear Ignorant Racist Guy who decided to email me…

» 30 November 2010 »

I get a wide range of responses to what I do as a writer/commentator and to whats posted on This Week in Blackness.

If you’ve read some of the comments on this site (before the comment system disaster of late 2010 which erased everything. Damn you disqus!) You’ve seen some magically stupid responses to posts and videos here. It’s not about whether they agree with the writers or me  or not (because I don’t have an issue when people say “ELON YOU ARE WRONG!” My friends do it regularly.) but some of the content of the comments can make you go “What the…no this so-and-so didn’t just…” But Its cool. It comes with the territory.

But this morning when I woke up I found an email that had the name *CENSORED* attached to it as the “sender.” (The email was also attached to this *CENSORED*) Apparently *CENSORED*, an *CENSORED*, decided he needed to express some feelings about TWiB!. The following is what was in his magical email. His words are in red and mine are in blue because in this scenario I’m on the side of good and he’s obviously an idiot.

From: <elvisriverss@yahoo.com>
Subject: TIPS

Yeah, I do have a tip for you. ( Always good when it starts like this…) Stop running this racist self-segregating website. (Self-segregating? How is that? It’s not like we don’t let our website play with other White websites. Even our topics aren’t exclusively “Black.” That was done on purpose. The idea was to show that “Blackness” can care about ANYTHING, contrary to what the Media likes to imply) Maybe I’ll open a site called TWiW and write a derogatory article called “Things That Blacks Do”. (One, this week week in whiteness already has a site. It’s called “CNN” and two – We’ve never had an article called “Things that Whites Do” so I’m not even sure of how this “payback” works…) Maybe I’ll even start a United Caucasian College Fund, WET, White History Month, NAAWP. (Don’t you love this logic? Black people are racist because they have things with the name Black in it. It’s not like this was a response to the mistreatment of a race of people for hundreds of years and the overlooking of them in media. No, its not about the fact that we needed to create organizations to fight for basic civil rights in this country as well as trying to help a people who didn’t have the same opportunity at education or generational wealth to afford said education, nope. Not about that at all. This guy is brilliant) Boy I’d bet you guys would totally chimp out on we whites, huh? (Oh, you’re looking to get me all riled up because you said chimp. Sorry. I’m not insulted. Lots of dumbasses call people names. It’s only an issue if you tried to get elected for something or worked for a place that I give money. As of now you’re just an ass on the internet.) Boy you’d be scaarreeeaammiiin racism or as you say’ raysis ‘. (Yes, cause dats how I’s be talkin’) Any organiztion or institution with a race attached to it is racist! (Okay this is a joke now right? Maybe this is some amazing attempt at satire that I’m not getting…) Let me axe you a quesshun. (Uh…axe away…) What is the percentage of kaffirs in U S prisons? (Kaffirs? Really? I haven’t heard that racial slur in the states since Danny Glover and Not-as-racist-as-he-was-going-to-be Mel Gibson was fighting evil South African diplomats in the late 80′s.  I would start to explain some of the reasons for the disproportionate number of minorities in the penal system but I doubt you’d care about facts and history and blah blah blah) You’re proud to be African-American right? (Nope. First of all I’m Black. Secondly I don’t take pride in a color. I take pride in a people that have overcome tremendous adversity that in present day allows me the privilege of responding to assholes on the internet….oh and vote.) Well, then why don’t you want to live in your home country? ( I do live in my home country. #BrooklynStandUp ) What? It’s ridddled with disease, poverty and corruption? (Okay that is no way to talk about Williamsburg. It’s not riddled with disease and poverty. They’re just hipsters. Thats how they’re supposed to look…oh wait. You’re doing the “Why don’t you go back to Africa” thing. Dude could you up your racism game? You’re not even trying at this point.) Well what do you think the majority of negroes are turning America into? (Er…awesome? The American Black is one of the most mimicked types of people in the WORLD.) The Hip Hop culture along with its subculture of glorified drug use, masochism, crime and reverse racism is why most people look down on Negroes. (Oh, thats why? It’s hip hop’s fault? Man, thank you for telling me. I was wondering how they decided to enslave and subjugate a people and then once they were “free” treat them like second class citizens, lynching black men and raping black women. And THEN allowing racism to become so institutionalized that there are remnants still within how we govern until this day. It was because of all that JAY Z blastin down the streets. You are a wealth of information sir.) You fuckers perpetuate your own stereotypes!

Wow, you actually said something that I sort of agree with. Yes, there are quite a few Blacks that perpetuate the same negative ideas that you spectacularly ignorant muthafuckas like to believe (Seriously Fuck Baracka Flocka Flame. Oh and while I’m at it throw Wacka flocka and Flava Flav in there. I need to get the most bang for my fucks.) But that doesn’t make it true of a people. Just because you say “Black People steal” and you see a Black person steal, that doesn’t mean you were right. That means you happen to have run across someone who stole. Correlation does not equal causation.

In other words, stop being a dumb ass Mr. *Censored*

*UPDATE* As soon as I published this a few colleagues suggested I hide the info I found on the dude via the email he sent. “What if he got hacked?” So because of that I have taken his name, occupation and facebook page off of the post. Am I not merciful?

    A. I hate Disqus! It’s awful.B. I wrote a post about the office on popten.net like 3 years ago and I get random comments all the time and someone today decided to tell me that women comedians aren’t funny they’re just “holes.” I don’t even want to try to understand the point the person was trying to make.

Thats not his name. Admittedly if someone was google savy they could figure it out but that was just the email address it was sent from. I thought it was fair to take out all the info “i” found out about him but leave the basic email address…

The fallacy of logic to which you refer in your last example is “converse fallacy of accident.” It is also the fallacy of “false cause.” It is also “deductive fallacy.”

I find fallacy fascinating. It is one of the things that I wish were rigorously taught in schools–to be able to determine the criteria for assessing information, to be able to know the difference between opinion and fact, and to be able to adjust opinion in the light of new evidence, and to develop an understanding that not all evidence is equal. Just because something is presented as fact, does not mean it is, and conjecture needs to be examined for soundness. Being able to recognize appeals to emotion are also valid as contributing markers for differentiating fact from opinion. *CENSORED*’s email was definitely full of emotional markers. Not many logical markers. *sigh*

I really wish our country (or even individual localities to begin with) had a different definition of “educate” “developed” and “literate” because to my mind, there are important avenues of self learning, development and literacy that are critical to the prosperity of human kind, that are completely bypassed in the realm of falling in line with the “supremacy of the state.” He who holds the money…. Okay so this is turning into my own personal rant. But really I would love to support any community that wishes to take the education of it’s children and moderate it with things that they see are important….but then I guess we end up with a situation like AZ that is crushing the already broken system. *sigh*

Hey, we keep trying and something will eventually come of it, right?!!

I’ve taught school before and the biggest missing link is what you said regarding fallacy being rigorously taught in schools. I believe “educators” should be taught more rigorously on the matter so that it can be integrated with so many “best practices” that many great teachers are already using…I taught Geometry and I was vehemently discouraged by colleagues and leadership about teaching proofs…I was soooo dismayed because there is little in math or any other discipline besides science that scratches the surface of critical thinking or critical reasoning. I was blessed to have parents who talked to my sister and and without knowing engaged us in much Socratic discussion about any and everything and read poetry to us early…
” I really wish our country (or even individual localities to begin with) had a different definition of “educate” “developed” and “literate” because to my mind, there are important avenues of self learning, development and literacy that are critical to the prosperity of human kind, ” is another crown jewel to your post …our overall approach needs to revisited and refined every so often to keep pace with the changing landscape of life and culture…we can’t dump new wine in old wine-skins and expect great things to happen…Best Danna

    Thanks Danna!

My mom was often “taken” by sales pitches/appeals to emotion, which is distressful, and on the part of the “seller” is to me unethical as it does not wish the best possible for the other individual(s). However I have been having great conversations with my husband and distilling some of these observations into something that can be expressed somewhat clearly.

Best of luck in all your education (and advocacy because knowledge is a tool for advocacy) efforts!

Flavor Flav is & has been making a living off of playing the buffoon. I’m not going to go point by point w/ some of the nonsense he’s done on Flavor of Love 1 and 2 and the Surreal Life. His latest endeavor? Flav’s Fried Chicken and Flavs Vodka in flavors like Grape and bubblegum.

I have no issue with Flavs skin color nor do I have an issue with his clock. Before his latest incarnation as the spokesman for ridiculousness I had no issue with the man. I did have an issue when he started profiting while creating myriad representations of black negativity in the media. And yes, there are others who deserve to be talked about too but he happen to be on my mind with his Chicken and Grape flavored vodka endeavors…

lol playing a buffoon? people make it seem like flavor flav is some classically trained actor playing the role of “black dude”. he’s not madea. he’s not pretending to be flavor flav. the dude is just like that. maybe he sells grape vodka and fried chicken cause the man LIKES grape soda and fried chicken! is that so far fetched? and whats so wrong about that? hows that make him a buffoon? i love fried chicken. i never had grape vodka, but it sounds delicious. does that make me a buffoon?
black folks this “oh lawd, dont embarrass me in front of these white folks” complex. they did the same thing to Louis Armstrong. called him a buffoon and sellout, with the smiling and sweating and handkerchief.. completely ignoring the man is one of the most important musicians in history. its the same shit today.
i respect flav. he’s not claiming to speak for every black man. he’s not flavor flav because thats how white people think black folks are. he’s flavor flav, because he’s flavor flav.
maybe you have to pardon me, because im from the poor community. i grew up on fried chicken and grape flavored drinks. i grew up on public enemy and “911 is a joke”. so it bothers me when other black folks turn their noses up at us “buffoons”.

Sorry Sir–You’re playing the “grew up in poor Black Community & listened to hip hop” card on a dude who Grew up in Bed-Stuy in the late 80′s early 90′s. I quote B.I.G. like he wrote Psalms 23. I grew up on Public Enemy as well but being apart of greatness in the past doesn’t allow you to do whatever you want later on. You’ve mentioned Flav’s color and clock then Louis Armstrong’s sweating and smiling. None of this is a reasonable acknowledgment of the negativity that I took issue with when dealing with Flav in the media.

If you went on television with a viking hat on yelling “wooooow” and shucking and jiving for a buck (which is EXACTLY what Flav was doing with his reality shows) all while helping degrade women of color then yes, I’d call you a buffoon. This Chicken/Vodka thing is just one of many things he’s done to create the bigger picture of ignorance and I’m simply not a fan of the constant perpetuation of stereotypes in the media.

im not playing any card. i know ur from bedstuy, ive heard ur act. but ur telling me, he sells fried chicken and grape vodka, like that makes him a buffoon. you brought that up, not me. so im ASKING, what makes selling fried chicken and grape vodka buffoonery? am i a buffoon cause i eat fried chicken or drink grape shit?
i wont argue that flavor flav is outlandish. my point is he was the SAME flavor flav on video music box in 88 as he was on vh1 in 2008. so why is he a buffoon NOW, if it was greatness in the past? the only thing thats changed is his audience.

you bring up “degrading women of color” in one breath, but you quote BIG like psalms in the next? did flavor flav write “me and my bitch”? no. did flav say “when the time is right, the wine is right, ill treat you right, you talk slick, ill beat you right”? no. did flav rap about robbing pregnant women for their #1mom pendants? no.

but if BIG said that on vh1 in the flavor of love time slot, black folks would probably be just as disgusted as they are by flavor flav.. if BIG went on vh1 and said “when i die i wanna go to hell so i can smoke blunts and shoot dice”, the black “intellectual” would have a fit. theyd say, that man is shucking and jiving! that man is degrading women of color! that man is a buffoon! Fuck BIG, Waka Flocka, AND Flavor Flav!!
    why is that?

  • http://twitter.com/MrJones91 Daniel Jones

  • http://elonjamesisnotwhite.com Elon James White

As I said. This is a part of a BIGGER picture. In 1988 Flav was a hype man for a politically progressive rap group. The spotlight simply wasn’t on him. You make a valid point about B.I.G. It’s something that I acknowledge regularly–the mix bag of hip-hop misogyny and art. I never claim Christopher Wallace was right for saying any of the derogatory things he said especially about women. When people make reference to it I fully admit it was negative and wrong. It just so happens that his immense talent made me want to learn more about metaphors and story telling. The question of whether talent supersedes content in what should and shouldn’t be accepted is a topic I’d love to revisit at another point. But my statements on Flav remain the same. You can’t compare Big and Flav at all. They do completely different things. I’m not defending misogyny in bigs lyrics but I don’t think anyone would claim that he was shucking and jiving (Maybe if we would’ve given Puffy a little more time with him) I’m not making an argument about the black intellectual here. I’m making the argument about “me.” I don’t qualify as a Blackademic and “I” am the one who doesn’t appreciate Flavs role in the media. If B.I.G. after Ready to Die went on national Television prime time and said some of the more ignorant shit he’s said, yes–I’d be annoyed. I’m upset when ANYONE wears ignorance like a badge of honor. But I’d hope, much like Jay Z did, B.I.G. would’ve grown and realized some of the dumb shit he was saying was wrong. But at his worst he still wasn’t as ignorant as Wacka Flocka.alth lately.

  • http://twitter.com/CheThinks Michael Che

im just sayin, flav has been flav forever. we (the hiphop community) loved flav for being flav. but it seems like its only funny when white people arent laughing too. then its embarrassing, or buffoonery. if chuck d had a dating show and made those same antics, just for the benefit of making madison ave laugh, id see your point. cause thats not chuck. this is why i bring up louis armstrong. it LOOKS like everything black folks are embarrassed to be. we may sugarcoat it and pussyfoot around it, but call it what it is. this dark dark man, selling chicken and grape vodka, smiling and dancing, is funny to us cause we’re not like him. but when white people see it, its embarrassing. cause god forbid, they think we’re all like that. i mean its cool for biggie to make ready to die, but only if it stays in the hood.. other than that, get a suit like jayz so you can take meetings with the mayor, right?

but you feel your way about flavor, or waka, big.. youre entitled. it just trips me out how BLACK people treat flav for simply being flav.

I like fried chicken and grape soda too. Ok ok I LOVE IT!!! I met Flav outside a club in D.C. years ago and he asked if I knew where he could score some weed. Do I think he is a buffoon? Nope. He is what he is. I also love Louis Armstrong and never knew people thought of him as a sellout or buffoon because he was smiling and sweating and used a handkerchief. But oh lawd you means all black people dont wear viking helmets and clocks on their chests? Seems some think white people are buffoons. He is an entertainer. White people have to accept Gallagher but does that mean all white people sledge hammer watermelon? Oh yeah I love that too. And 911 is a joke. Michael is right on with his agnst though I hope not misguided anger towards all of us who are melanin deficient. Though if you ever watched Springer I have had to hold my head in shame to the representation of “my people” As for Mr. Censored, I am not sure which country you are living in but America is riddled with disease, corruption and poverty too. There are just as much if not more white people (Because there are more white people in America) that make this country look bad as does any black person or foreigner who does some crap that the rest of the world views and wags their finger saying bad Americans. Black people perpetuating their stereotypes and white people doing the same making black people think we all hate them just because they are black. You are what you preach. I am not a fan of either perpetuation. Both sides make me sick to my stomach. If stupidity is a race then yeah I am a racist for anyone ready to throw out that stupid comment from reading what I wrote and have written in recent responses on here. Stop going to your reptile mode and start using the cognitive thinking source you have been given. Like Tici and Danna mentioned earlier. There are the facts and there are the opinions. Discern from both clearly before making yourself look like the true buffoon.

The Eisenhower Silver Dollar did not see much circulation owing perhaps to its cumbersome size. However, it was minted again to mark the US bicentennial in 1976. This commemorative coin was designed by Dennis Williams who added the Liberty Bell to the reverse while maintaining the Apollo 11 tribute with the image of the moon. This one maintained the original size of 38.1 mm, however.
