[TECH] E3: Gumdrops & Lollipops

» 18 June 2010 »

As I write my grocery list for the week, I pause to check over a few items. Let’s see: 1.) milk; 2.) bread;  3.) Slim Xbox 360 w/built-in WiFi; 4.) Assassins Creed Brotherhood; 5.) Kid Icarus Uprising; 6.) eggs;  7.) juice….wait a minute…

Yes it’s the most wonderful time of the year; and no it has nothing to do with the pagan, Fat Tony looking, red and white snowsuit wearing, dude known as Kris K (–“from around the way!”).  It is the celebration of all things digitally holy and awesomely superior in the world of video games. Quick Primer: E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is an annual trade show that debuts the most anticipated hardware & software in the computer and video games industry. It is a place of resplendent wonder where life is perfect—pardon as I wipe away the drool.

My apparent penchant for geek grossness aside, E3 has definitely delivered quite handily this year and continues to make me even giddier with each announcement. I decided to run through the products likely to make a killing at the registers:

1.) Microsoft Kinect (dropping Nov. 4, 2010)

This is at the top of my list simply because I love to flail around like a buffoon while pantomiming a full triathlon meet; complete with Nintendo-Power-Pad-style running in place. No seriously. I think its fun. Kinect (or ‘Project Natal’ for those who recognize it by codename) will create an immersive experience that is pretty much a few, albeit large, steps away from fully interactive, holo-reality (yes I made that up but I have the cool points to do it). I know I might be giving it way too much credit but I can’t help but to think of what ideas this peripheral will spark. Some people may call it a controller-less HD Wii type of setup but I think it’s a little more than that. Want to know why I can say that? Two words: Star Wars. However, I’m afraid that it looks like the gameplay on rails and there isn’t much you’re actually “doing”. It remains to be seen how much actual freedom you have with this game + Kinect. If that’s not good enough (or bad enough….pessimist) for you, then take a look at Dance Central. Cheese Factor times 10.

2.) Nintendo 3DS (Tentative Date: 2011)

Call it fluff, riding the “3D in MAH FACE” wave, or yet another DS that will, inevitably, print money (thanks for that timeless classic, Joystiq); it is a new offering from Nintendo and different from just a ginormous DS (see DSi XL). Quite frankly I haven’t played my DS Lite in over 2 years and there was nothing compelling enough to make me want to purchase a DSi. I’ve sold off a lot of DS game I had for Gamestop trade-in credits (except for my out-of-print Tetris DS [worth $50+]—booyah!). Having no purpose, my DS had been sadly suffering from abandonment as I waited for something different. Waiting for innovation from Nintendo usually pans out well and I think we’ve been handsomely rewarded.

The 3DS offers rich 3D experiences in a handheld, all without the use of those funky 3D glasses. It’s a welcomed aspect because I wear glasses myself and let me tell you—I have a HELL of a time trying to balance the 3D specs over my prescription glasses. (I’m quite sure there’s a rule somewhere that says I shouldn’t be doing that…meh…). Anyways, to help cater the non-spec’d 3D experience to each individual’s eyes, there is a slider control that toggles the strength of the 3D effect from “itsa teeny lil 3D” to “thatsa lotta 3D!” (sorry I had a Super Mario moment). The top screen is the 3D screen, while the bottom is the normal touch screen. In addition to the D-pad is a new joystick style button that should help ease the smoothness of traversing through 3D worlds. Throw in backwards compatibility with existing DS games, full six-axis motion control, stealthy Wi-Fi connectivity, STAR-freakin-FOX (my favorite out of the Big N franchises), and a host of titles—then you got yourself the beginnings of one sweet, empty wallet.

I’ve only really taken small sips of the delightful brew that is still cooking up at E3. Are there any games or peripherals that you are excited about? What do you think about Goldeneye 2010 (Wii) and Metal Gear Solid: Rising (Xbox 360)? Shout, Shout…let it all out!

Are you REALLY that hyped for Nata..I mean Kinect? The Mircosoft press conference didn't go over very well to me. Retreads of three to four year old Wii games isn't going to sell alot of people on a $150 webcam. That dance game was brutal. It would have gone over better if they signed MC Hammer to a game deal. Hammer pants are long overdue for a comeback. MS is really gambling on Kinect getting that soccer mom money, but I really don't see how that will work when most of those people that would buy those kinds of games likely already have a Wii.

Nintendo basically said, “You know what? We've got games you love already. We'll just make them look better for you.” Kid Icarus was a nice surprise, but I kind of wished it wasn't in 3D. Nintendo didn't make it clear if the 3DS would have it's own games or not. I wouldn't think so, but you never know. Also, I can't believe they brought up the Virtual Boy. Do you know how many time I threw up playing that thing? The new Kirby was so sugary sweet, I almost got Diabetes. I just felt like Nintendo isn't trying anymore. The “3D w/o glasses” meme is a good company line, but none of that as worked very well in the past. Hope they have that stuff ironed out.

Sony impressed me with the Move controller. It does look alot more accurate then the other motion controllers. And the price tag makes me more likely to get it. Not that I am planning on getting it, but $50 is alot better then $150. Twisted Metal coming back is the worst secret ever, but I'm glad that it's finally coming. I don't really care about 3D in general. I don't have a 3DTV, and I'm not getting one. I waited a long time for my 42″ TV I have now and I'm not getting a new one ever. The Playstation Plus service sounds cool. $50 to play all the old PS1 games and get free stuff? Sure. I'm down.

The biggest thing about E3 was Gabe Newell from Valve saying that Steam was going to be on the PS3 AND that Portal 2 was going to be the version to get. After all the trash Newell has talked about Sony's console, for him to come to Sony's press conference and talk about how they (Valve) are going to make games for the system should be the story coming out of E3.

I might have to write something about E3 as well……

I'm still stoked over the PlayStation 3 I was late to the game with. Super Street Fighter 4, forever! Now, if Microsoft or Nintendo or HEY, SONY, can figure out a way to make *that* game come alive via my own hand movements, we're good.

I totally agree with you on the egregious price tag for Kinectal (figured it was a good combo of Natal + Kinect *shrugs*)…I weeped in the twitterverse when I heard the price tag announcement. Yeah I'm still pretty interested in what Kinect will really do. I like the idea of motion control, w/o the controller. I think it was more so the technology behind it that impressed me (I watched a few vids highlighting its camera/IR interface). Granted its not exactly new, per se–but I'm still interested. I'm very afraid, however that they won't expand the potential on this thing and tack on some motion control “pieces” to games instead of really developing for this thing (iLaughed @ Dance Central).

I was freaking floored about the whole Portal 2 announcement. Not b/c its Portal 2 but because Gabe is all of a sudden honkey-dorey with Sony. I was like “waaa? o_O”.

I really think the 3DS is going to have a field day. Its funny how often the whole 3D fad has rose & fallen through the decades but I think Nintendo may have something here. From all the reviews I read (Kotaku, Engadget, etc); it seems Ninty really has the mechanics down on this thing. I think it was clear the 3DS would absolutely have its own games produced specifically for it. Why?–cause that's what Nintendo DOES. (sidebar: The only Kirby I fully enjoy messing with is the one in Smash Bros…)
I'm on the fence with Move. Super accurate or not, (to me) it's pretty much a high-def Wii clone. When I saw it a few months back I basically had the same argument as you against Kinect: Why make the same type of games with a motion controller that have been available for the Wii since 2006, and bank on that casual gamer money? Then again Sony is the same company the innovated with the Eye Toy years back….it may have went no where (fiscally speaking) but it inspired a lot of ideas.

I dunno. I think what remains to be seen are the playable aspects (the games) and how much replay value is really built into these things.

We talked about the Kinect deal last week on our podcast: http://panelsonpages.com/?p=24663 I think you'd appreciate our take on it.

Personally I think the 3D aspect of TV's and electronics and things like this are going to go the way of HD-DVD's, a transition between two technologies that won't make it past the next innovation. To this day the CD is still used.. 3D has gone in and out of tech for ages. *cues 70s style movie theater with the blue and red glasses*. Since it requires those dumb glasses it has a serious weakness, when holographics get tight, it's over for 3D.. and we'll still be using CD's to burn things to them, lol.

As far as Natal, motion control is cool. I'm interested in the sensitivity of it.. have them do a commercial of Karate Kid Smith going nuts infront of it and catching all the moves, lol. Great post Tati.

i understand that you want the fight moves to come “alive” by your own movements. i can understand simple kicks and punches, but do you HONESTLY wanna throw down a Chun-Li “Spinning Bird Kick” in your living room? Points for attempting that though.

I'm just curious, what isle can I find the 360 in? The Nintendo 3DS seems really promising. Since i'll have to take out a second mortgage for the Kinetic I will be opting out this year. I promise that Microsoft needs to call bowser for a consultation, every time they release a new product it just ends up seeming so blah.

Next time you go grocery shopping can you pick Sprint up something with a little more spice than what they keep in the kitchen now? Great Post
