[TECH] Android’s Favorite Food is Froyo

» 25 May 2010 »

What’s most intriguing about Android 2.2 (The Artist Also Known As “Froyo”)? After reading numerous articles on all things relating Android, new API’s, new features, and new updates, let’s just say this super nerd was excited. Some points I wanted to touch on:

  • 100,000 new Android activations a day—monolithic. When SkyNet orders your extinction, don’t say I didn’t tell you so.
  • Google’s views on Apple—HATE HATE HATE. I’m waiting for Steve Job’s snooty letter of “how Google doesn’t utilize the full web” so some other fantastic story about how Froyo causes cancer.
  • Cloud-to-device API – direct OTA downloads from PC to device. I know all you 733t black hats are thrilled!
  • Tethering and portable hot spot – share the magic with your iPad…oh wait…wasn’t it supposed to be made of magic? …Where’s the magic? Who stole the magic? Criss Angel?
  • Update All Button: update all apps at once or automatic updating with user permission – FINALLY! Geez! Even Vic Gundotra was embarrassed that this feature has JUST now been implemented. You get a cool pass this time…I GUESS…
  • Bugs tab that displays the entire stack trace of crash reports in different apps. ß openness and honesty. At last your rants about how no one believes that, that Rick James app that you and 30 other people downloaded keeps crashing.
  • Over the air streaming of non DRM music/iTunes streaming to your phone – attach your android device to your sound system and stream music straight from your desktop. Wait that sounds familiar…

If you want to see everything for yourself, start here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89xc_1Vv69k

While I’m sipping on the Android Kool-Aid let me point out one issue of semantics that bothers me to no end. Ladies and Laymen…when I, or anyone else says the “Droid” understand that it is different from saying “Android”. For example, since I’m the resident tech expert in my family, people call me and ask me for advice and recommendations on what gadgets to spend their hard-earned money. A few months or so ago I received numerous texts and emails asking me about “The Sprint Droid”. People in the know will be quite bemused by this notion but I was annoyed. The text conversation went like this:

Uncle: Hey Tatiana, what you know ‘bout that new Sprint Droid?

Me: o_O…that it doesn’t exist?

Uncle: Well yes it does, I just came from the store and one of those crazy representatives was telling me about that new droid phone they got coming out…

Me: ……well first the “Droid” is a phone on VERIZON. There is currently no “DROID” on Sprint. I think you’re confusing names here. What Sprint will have is a phone that uses the ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM. There’s a diff.

Uncle: Oh…so…???

Me: Meaning, on Verizon, the phone with the ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM is the DROID. On Sprint there will be a phone with the same operating system but it will be named something different. Unless you’re planning on switching to Verizon you don’t have an Android phone right now.

Uncle: …So we getting the Droid on Sprint?

Me: *gives up*

Since this conversation, the EVO 4G has been introduced to Sprint. I am now receiving Google Chats about “Hey what you think about the EVO 4G? Should I buy the Droid on Sprint?”….I can only sigh and keep it moving.

In closing I want to give a big high five to Google on the I/O conference. They definitely set the stage for pure awesomeness.

And one more thing, kind of an open question for Mr. Gundotra (who is one HELL of a presenter by the way…): How you do you feel about Steve Jobs saying that Google will never surpass Apple with Android???–>

first off, the fact that you're fly and nerdy is super sexy. and no that's not me trying to holler, that's just the fucking truth.

second off, the android is not a phone i ever even think about. partially because i'm on #teamblackberry, and partially because if i wasn't on that team, the iPhone's trillness (probably based on their crazy marketing/advertising alone) woulda sucked me in. any android-based phone is like the last choice in my eyes. not because i don't like it, but because their marketing is scary and they fuck w/ service providers that i can't rock with.

third off, your uncle is the man for going toe-to-toe with you and you shitted on him like that is incredible.

LMAO!!! what makes the Android marketing “scary?”

I admit the iPhone is trill in its own rite but you definitely should at least go in store and mess around with an Android based phone. There's so much potential for greatness (& proven greatness) that you havent been privy to yet…

And thank you. I'm very gracious for comment & compliment! :-)

Your tenacity in clinging to the semantics of Droid vs Android is both hilarious and something I can totally relate to. I've had countless conversations with friends and relatives that were almost word for word identical to yours.

I'm a proponent of Apple technology, but not a fanboy. And it makes me really happy to see Google stepping up to the plate with Android, and pumping out updates on a regular basis. Competition fosters innovation, as we've seen with Apple having sudden changes of heart about missing features as soon as a competitor starts including them. How well Google is doing in keeping up (or surpassing) Apple will be highly contingent on what we see in the final version of iPhone OS 4.0, and in the hardware of the next generation iPhone itself. At the moment, Apple's cloud storage access ranges from spotty to useless. Actually so does anything relating to individual file management. So that's one area that I think Google can definitely make progress against them.

    Great article.

    Well said!

I have qualms with Apple's “sudden changes of heart” when competitors introduce feature that that Apple could have easily included in their own devices. I think it irks me more because it's done all in the name of business. (“include a camera in the first iteration of the iPad? Why? Let's do it in the iPad 2G!”…) I think they're in the “It prints money!” line of thinking ala Nintendo & the DS.

Regardless I do give Apple its deserved props for its innovations and I believe the introduction of the iPhone was paramount if not *the* catalyst to the revolution of smart phones. Of COURSE Google would never allow that to stand for too long…

Thanks for the comment and thank you for reading! :-)

    Great blog Tatiana

Like you, I find myself bearing the title of “Tech goddess” amongst family and friends and I too, am more annoyed at their ignorance than honored that they trust my opinion and seek my knowledge when it comes to spending their hard-earned dough. My first question to the geek-deficient violator of my peace would be this: If you can't be bothered to research the name of the phone, why do you need a phone this advanced? And if we may conclude that you don't, in fact, need a phone this advanced, which of the features and specs that you expect me to recite like Bible verses are going to mean anything to you?

Annoyance evolves into slight disgust when, upon receiving no credible answers to such sensible questions, I realize this person just wants the “flyest”, most expensive gadget they can have regardless of their ability to use it to its full potential. Upon this realization I would conclude that the phone is too far above their heads (this being said with more than a trifle of condescending cordiality) and suggest that perhaps there is a Nokia candybar somewhere in the back of the store more suited to their needs.

    L.M.A.O. You. are. amazing.–must be a Tatiana thing ;-)

“My first question to the geek-deficient violator of my peace…?” Yes! don't you just feel violated!? (in the most none physical, tech way possible of course…). Why do you want me to give you a laundry list of information just for you to say “…and that means what, exactly?” smh…

    Thank you for the comment!

Oh, and about Froyo! While my life is equal parts run by Apple and Google, I'm inclined to say that even Google's latest can't throw a jailbroken iPhone off its thrown. Some will argue that jailbreak doesn't count because it's not as popular or even legal, but I'm arguing results, not commercial success here. That being said, Google is so close I can taste it. I almost want a Nexus One. And once I almost want something, it's only a matter of time before one of its descendants finds its way into my heart. Nexus…Two? Maybe.

I've been following along with the announcements of this year's Google I/O conference and I'm pretty sure they've announced every last kind of computer/web tech that can ever be announced for the next ten years (lol). However, I do think the reports touting Google's new-found superiority are a bit premature. As geeks, we should be the first to know that an announcement is not the same as a delivery. And a delivery is not the same as a promise (a promise being tech or gadgetry that works as originally advertised). I commend Google for taking Apple head on (what's a Microsoft?) and I'll be the FIRST (okay second…I have schoolwork) to adopt any of their new stuff as my own when I decide it's something that will work for me. But I've seen too many disappointments *side eye at Apple TV*, to entertain anything more than a slight glimmer in my nerdy eye that Google will change the game.

Child it's not easy being a tech snob.

  • dobie

I'm an accidental techie, having fallen into tech publishing almost ten years ago and being sucked into checking out /. at least once a week. I'm definitely not at your level, but I do research on these things as part of my job and I have to say I am totally psyched about the new android platform based on what I've read. Anything to knock Apple off its high horse. Now if only I can afford the thing…

  • http://twitter.com/TatianaKing Tatiana G. King

sometimes the 'accidental' route is the best one. Keeps ya from “obsessing over Google as SkyNet incarnate” yanno? lol…

And trust…you'll be able to afford something Android based before Apple-i-anything…

  • http://twitter.com/getatstefani Stefani

First, I'd like to say the “Uncle” you are referring to is NOT the uncle I'm married to. LOL. I've taught him well. He's a little techie in training.

My contract ends on 6/4/2010 and I'll bee getting a new phone on 6/5/2010! Lol.

I'm getting the Sprint EVO because of their 30 day return policy. Then I can see if the rumors on the Verizon iPhone is really announced at the Apple Developers confrence that weekend. The new iPhone is rumored to have a 1GHz processor like the EVO and Droid Incredible. I haven't seen specs on the true Internal memory. The EVO and Incredible have 512M.

I plan to use each carrier's return policy to try out their phone and service. So far the EVO, Incredible and iPhone 4G (VZ) are in the running.

  • http://twitter.com/TatianaKing Tatiana G. King

    lol no not THAT Uncle..haha.

that's actually a very smart plan. More people should use those return policies to their advantage and get the best device for their money.

Funny how AT&T ridiculously increased their ETF (early termination fees) that will take effect June 1st–right BEFORE WWDC2010–before there will be any true indication of whether or not there will be a verizon branded iphone soon. And by that time anyone who hasnt ended contract will be in dire straits.

  • http://twitter.com/Nem_Zero Nem_Zero

Yeah everyone's waiting for that OTA update to their phones. I've heard a looottt of good things about this OS's version. Good read! Looking forward to more!

    P.S. LOL @ that convo

Of course Google will eventually pass Apple. Google is backed by the CIA, and government information agencies have access to everything that monstrous company swallows up. First it was email.. (“hey… never delete another email… ever!) Sounded good back then right? Only now we realize that our lives are in our emails and not having deleted an email in the last 5 years is a major personal security vulnerability. Next thing you know Google violates the globe with that disgusting introduction of Wave. Trust, that Wave information disclosure was no mistake. It made everyone's contact information publically available for a window of time (not unlike Facebook with their privacy updates). Google is a good example of a tech company that is now too big to fail. Too many people, companies, and governements now rely on google, and its naive to think that a 'company' could harbor that kind of power. Apple is a better company than google because they respect their customers and produce excellent products.

As a side note, I think it's interesting Microsoft has lost all its footing on the innovative tech frontier, as there's hardly anything interesting coming out of Redmond.
