What happened to Rap? “Im on a Boat” gets Grammy nod.

» 03 December 2009 »

Yesterday the Grammy nominations dropped and we saw everyone from Taylor Swift to Jay Z pick up a nod from the all powerful music awards show. But did anyone see this coming?

BEST RAP/SUNG COLLABORATION: LONELY ISLAND FT. T-PAIN “I’M ON A BOAT”

No, that ISN’T a typo. Are you not familiar with “I’m On a Boat”? Let me enlighten you.

The Spoof song about Rap excess featuring Rap’s excess king “T-Pain” (Dude wears a top hat and a chain that says “Big Ass Chain”) is now up against actual songs like Beyoncé & Kanye West “Ego”, Keri Hilson, Kanye West, & Ne-Yo “Knock You Down”, Jay-Z, Rihanna, & Kanye West “Run This Town”, T.I. & Justin Timberlake “Dead And Gone”…

So the question is, what does this say about the State of Hip Hop?

I hit up #TWITTER about this and received comments like “Thats my ‘ish!” (@Reetamac) and “Reasonable. And I hope they win.” (@spannerjaxs) but there was also outrage. tweet1

The question is, did the Grammy’s lose credibility, or did Rap lose it way before this? Another question “I” Was wondering was would the song have been nominated with out the participation of the Clown Prince #T-Pain? Did he give the song just enough credibility that it was a completely reasonable choice? Did he say anything on “I’m on a Boat” that was any more ridiculous than he has said on numerous other “Real” Rap songs?

“Poseidon, LOOK AT ME!”

This is the Realist Shit I’ ever Wrote? Chillin’ in my Maybach”

“I’mma put my BMI all over your ASCAP, SHORTAY.”

At what point is the line drawn. If you can say “I’mma a flirt whether I’m in or out of town, thats why the call me Teddy Pinned-Her-Ass-Down” (Rapey Much?) and thats REAL then can we question “I’m on a Boat” seriously?

As one #Tweeter put it…

tweet2

That’s the realest shit he ever wrote…

*Sidenote: I fully admit that whenever I am on some sort of floating object I will yell out “Posedon, Look at me” or “I ****D A MERMAID.” And will continue to do so…

    All I know is,

    “I’m on a boat / and / I’m goin fast / and
“I got a nautical themed pashmina afghan”

is at least as good as any other line i’ve heard these days, what with jay-z talking about riesling and rick rawse’s crab meats.

I want to be upset about this, I really really do. But then I keep remembering Weird Al from my childhood/now. Isn’t it similar?

Meh… it feels pointless to even bother examining this at all. It’s the Grammys. Isn’t it all more of a popularity contest than a real measure of talent and ability?

    Ah well… so it goes..

My issue is that this song was obviously a spoof, a joke. It just makes me question how or why, it was placed in this category. If they wanted to recognize this song with a Grammy nomination it would be better placed in say a comedic category(if at all). To me it seems with this nomination, it says that this song not only is a credible song within the genre but somehow goes above and beyond to the point that it needs Grammy recognition. Are they sending a message, that somehow rap in it’s current state is merely comical buffoonery? Maybe, maybe not. That being said, the song in it’s sillyness is entertaining, funny in fact.

before i make my comment i must say that it is nice to be able to put something in the “website” field when i leave comments….anywho….

this truly angers me b/c there are legitimate artists who deserve to be in this category, but instead, they choose a spoof (a funny spoof, but a spoof nonetheless) to represent hip-hop??

now to completely refute my previous statement, maybe this is really what hip-hop needs to wake up, or at least listen up, and really start pushing good talent. && maybe it’ll wake up the fans to start accepting real talent….not radio talent!
    just a thought….

Although I don’t approve with it receiving a Grammy nod because it IS a spoof…this song sounds a hell of a lot better than the crap that is being played every hour on the hour. Especially when I hear lyrics like: “I’m not a racist, cause all my diamonds Caucasians”.

What does it say about rap…that it has come a long way from it’s origins.

Is that a bad thing, yes and no. Yes – because we have spoofs that actually garner more credibility than multi-platinum artist; No because we have spoofs that actually sound good AND garner more credibility than the crap multi-platinum artist put out and try to pass off as music.

I would listen to this over any song about women/dirty things rapper want to do to women any day. I’m a metal fan so either way I’m not thrilled but every poppy (and yes rap can get very poppy) is the same with a lot of repetition and not a lot of interesting progressions. In the end, to me it’s the same.

If the song ‘My Humps’ can WIN a Grammy, which it did, then why can’t this one be nominated. It entertained me about as much as My Humps did. And since when are we looking to the Grammy’s to tell us about the state, credibility or validity of hip hop. They’ve only given The Roots like one grammy and they’re more talented than 90% of everyone nominated in the same category for the last 10 years.

I hate that it is being considered alongside legitimate artists contributions because i think it then makes a mockery of the other artist’s work. Theres a lot of stupid/weak rock music and played out country – would they really have considered spoof rock or spoof country alongside legitimate rock and country. I don’t think it is an appropriate thing for them to do and just because it was funny or entertaining doesn’t mean it deserves to be put in this category…..If thats the case why don’t we start putting Chris Rock or Dave Chapelle renditions of songs in the same category – Comics who come up with funny songs/parodies should get their own section…..

I honestly think they deserve to win, simply because the content of the piece was the best part. Thanks to them, no one will ever look at a small yacht without asking the mighty god Poseidon to look down on them flipping burgers in swim trunks and flippy-floppys.

What happened to the Grammys? I can’t even get that upset because the Grammys haven’t been relevant since Ashanti won (maybe even a little before that).
