Today in Blackness: Economic Turmoil’s Littlest Victims

» 28 January 2009 »

At what point is killing your wife, small children and yourself not only an option, but what you settle on as the best solution? How do you go from “We might have to sell the house and move to a smaller place,” to “We might have to have the kids stay with some relatives for a while,” to “Or, I could kill them all”?

Los Angeles officials say Ervin Lupoe, despondent that he and his wife had lost their jobs at Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center, shot his wife, Ana, and his five children before killing himself. Found in the home with the bodies of their parents were an 8-year-old girl, 5-year-old twin girls and 2-year-old twin boys. Some were shot multiple times.

In his suicide note Lupoe claimed he and his wife had mutually agreed that killing themselves and their children was their best bet. He wrote, “So after a horrendous ordeal my wife felt it better to end our lives and why leave our children in someone’s else’s hands.”

The Lupoe case is the fifth mass death of a Southern California family by murder or suicide in a year. Said Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner: “It’s just not a solution. There’s just so many ways you find alternatives to doing something so horrific and drastic as this.”

These are times that try all people.
What I feel bad about is that there are many people who are not even trying to cope with the inconvience that this downturn is having. Many pople hane no safety net, savings, or job options to turn to? How did this happen? Was it just too much too soon? Was it the inabiltiy to deal with the situation? A whole community will never know. An extended family will always wonder.

Soooo….why does everyone assume HE killed his family? Read the message:

“So after a horrendous ordeal my wife felt it better to end our lives and why leave our children in someone’s else’s hands.”

…and note that there WAS a 911 call:

“In the 911 call, police said, Lupoe reported returning home and finding his family dead.”

What if his wife killed the children and herself? He arrived home, found them dead, called 911. Realized fairly quickly she had done it, and so with his family dead and no job, sent the fax off and killed himself, too?

I don’t know if we should just believe the part about his wife agreeing with him. Just because he writes something in the letter doesn’t make it true, after what he did I wouldn’t believe anything that he had to say. They had some serious issues if this was the only answer. They were definetely not living in poverty, and obviously bypassed all kinds of alternatives when he decided to kill them all. I’d say most americans are in worse situations, could he not cope with the idea of being a lower income family that may have to live in the bad side of town somewhere else? If it came down to living in a homeless shelter, did he think no one would adopt their adorable children, if it even would have gone that far? How can you kill your children, in a gory, suffering fashion, and justify yourself? He/they didn’t love their kids, and if they did, they love themselves far more. tragic as it may have been. Tragic as it may have been, those children were murdered out of the selfishness of their parents. On the one hand I wish him peace because he was so troubled, but on the other, how dare he take the lives of those angels

I agree with phillygal. How can a parent kill their own children? I can understand people can get desperate in a situation like that and wanting to kill themselves, but to kill your own children is beyond anything. Regardless of what people say, these two parents should never have been able to have kids and – I don’t believe they ever cared more for their children than for themselves. Despicable, is what it is and I hope he rot in hell for what he did to those kids.

What does the econmony have to do with this crime. teh blame is squarely on the father who made bad decisions, would not man up and took his family lives.

The new president has got to do something more significant than pushing for banks to get bailed out or more americans are going to do this, since there are people unable to deal with losing all employment, having no food and knowing no one will help at the government level without them waiting weeks and months for paperwork to be processed, providing meager help even then.

this is a really tragic story, but the blame rests on this man. could he have been mentally ill?
when my dad lost his job we hunkered down as a family, he started driving up to 100 miles a day just to find work for a few days.
I know this is cheesy, but never give up never surrender.

As a mother, I am so saddened by this news. No one has the right to judge this man and his family. I pray that they are all in God’s care in heaven. These are very tough times for a lot of families who are out of work, losing their homes, or both. Simple twist of fate and it can be YOU. If you are fortunate enough to lend a helping hand please do so. If you need help, know that there are people out there willing to help just like me. My thoughts and prayers to the Lupoe family….

People in third world countries live in such dire situations every day and still manage to raise children and pull it through. In those countries you are totally on your own – the govt. doesn’t help you with unemployment benefits, and you can forget about getting a credit card or a loan.

It seems like only in a place like LA would someone consider not having a house, car, and a job as the end of life. It’s sad because people aren’t willing to look at options beyond their Starbucks lifestyle.

These are the times when churches and The Church (all Christians together) need to reach out to people and give them the hope and comfort that only Jesus can give. People need to know that there is a God who cares and who will keep them afloat if they trust on Him. And… some of these people need forgiveness, whether you think they deserve it or not. (The article about this story on CCN says that the company fired both parents after an internal investigation.) If God loves us so much as to send his only Son to suffer and die for our forgiveness, then we can also love and forgive others. I feel that this tragic event is because of a failure of my Christian brothers to reach out to this man and his family. It makes me want to cry.

Very very sad. These poor parents. Such desperation. Where was God? No more suffering for this family. But the rest of you…

More interesting are the comments and lack of understanding found here. You folks are so predictable, cowardly, lazy and beneath what this couple went through leading up to this act.

If there was any justice in this Nation Bush and his cronies would have been charged for the murder of this family. But instead we get spare change as promised by Obama

Remember you don’t have rights to take away your children’s lives although you have ability to do so. Human life is not just a biological concept. It has spirit which comes from God. Your children were born from you but they don’t belong to you because God is the real creator and it is God who let them grow. Just think how complex the growing process can be for human starting from a single cell and what a marvelous work God has done. As parents you only did a little compared to God. Now you killed them. You have destroyed God’s work! Think what punishment you are going to receive in Hell?

In the cnn story it says – He said the initial interview was held on December 19, and when he reported for work on December 23, “I was told by my administrator … that ‘You should not even have bothered to come to work today. You should have blown your brains out.’”

If this is true than the administrator should feel shameful. Our work colleages are just that colleages, people we don’t really know and should be considerate of. This man obviously had mental issues and this remark while not the cause highlighted to the man just how alone he was. If this administrator said these words and works in the medical field perhaps her supervisors should look at how see handles delicate matters in relation to patients and other co-workers.

I am a child psychologist who works with abnormal pathology daily and words can hurt and at times kill. We don’t always know what someone is thinking and should never treat someone with compassion even when they are being disciplined.

Such a sad and crude act. Can’t really justify the act but I can kind of understand the thought process.

There are a lot of people losing jobs left and right and if they couldn’t support themselves financially, they would lose everything.

No food to eat. No house. No cars. Nothing. i highly doubt the state could help with the economic issues that are going to happen in 09.

This is just a tragedy in a world and nation marred by bad news.

This was a premeditated homocide and had NOTHING to do with him losing his job. Men have been known to become despondent commit suicide after the loss of a job, but not to take their five children with them. This man was obviously very sick and was eventually going to murder his family; it was only a matter of time and he would have used whatever excuse was at hand at the time. Such is the nature of a psychopathic killer.

During the 1929 Depression, there were many many suicides. I’m sure that the fact that they both lost their jobs at once made it feel so much more unsurmountable. Just yesterday we heard that another 2 million people lost their jobs. So it’s not just like you know you can find a solution soon. Many people now live in their cars.

I am married with children and we are in pretty much the same position. I can understand the desperation and the feelings of failure on the part of both parents. However, I could never bring myself to harm my kids. Having grown up in foster care myself and having been molested in more than one of my foster homes, there were times when I wished my mom would have taken my life instead of leaving me to the state to raise. Now, as a mom I would walk through hell with a water gun to keep a roof over my kids heads and food on the table, not everyone can stomach some of the things you may need to do in desperate times of survival. I promise you I have done things I never thought that I would and would willing do them again if it meant keeping my kids safe at home with me.

I really think someone needs to investigate the employer a little more. As it is, it’s difficult to deal with losing your job but the way the employer handled it made it that much worse.

My wife and I discussed this: our biggest fear is NOT losing our jobs – there are alternatives – always. Family, friends, lower income, smaller house – NOT KILLING YOUR WIFE AND CHILDREN – EVER!! What is money anyway but a fleeting thing. The people you love – that is timeless. No the biggest fear isn’t that we lose money – it’s that we lose our loved ones. What was done was incomprehensible. I have no sympathy for him and do not blame “the economy” for this horrendous act.

This man is a despicable coward. There is so much more to life than material things. If he and his wife were willing to snuff out the lives of five innocent children over a job loss, then I hope the children are surrounded by angels and the parents are left to an eternal life without them.

It sounds like his employer found a way to fire him so they wouldn’t have to pay him the severance and/or unemployment as they would if they simply had to lay him off, and that is just plain wrong. To top it off, I believe that someone really did say those cruel words to him, “You should just blow your brains out” because why would he lie in a suicide letter?

I’m NOT justifying the murder/suicide but someone should look into companies to make sure they don’t have unethical or unfair terminations to avoid having to pay into the unemployment benefits after laying off someone by unfairly saying the person was fired from their job rather than terminated due to economic reasons.

Losing a job is hard enough without the insult from the employer refusing you the termination benefits they’re required to pay. On top of that, firing someone means the company has to put on record that they feel the employee did something that was a fireable offense. On top of THAT, someone suggested he kill himself. With the predictably terrible feeling anyone has at losing a job, an unethical employer can add insult to injury and push someone from frustrated and financially strapped to depressed and flat broke far too easily.

It’s very sad, It’s a sad statement on our society we’re a nation of spoiled pussies. People in poorer nations have shit for money have 7 or 8 kids and they still manage to be happy what is wrong with us. Also God has nothing to do with this, this man and his wife made poor choices and choose the easy way out and ended 5 innocent lives, due to their own selfishness.
