UNACCEPTABLE: Shooting of Oscar Grant

If you havent already heard:

A young man allegedly involved in a fight aboard a BART train was shot to death by a BART police officer on the platform of the Fruitvale Station early New Year’s Day, in the midst of a brawl between two groups of young train passengers.

Oscar Grant, 22, was shot once while on the platform after a BART officer drew his gun during what officials called a volatile and chaotic scene. A gravely wounded Grant was taken to Highland Hospital, where he died Thursday morning, the Alameda County coroner’s office said. – (source)

Now what you probably imagine is a young man trying to attack the officer. Perhaps a group all with guns and knives coming directly at the cops leaving them no choice.

How about this?

How is that acceptable? How is this not the first thing on every station every day for the past 5 days? I’ve read that they said “The Cop is distraught about what happened.” Um…You know who else is distraught? Anyone related to Oscar Grant. Hell, I’M DISTRAUGHT! This is horrific. Things like this just shouldn’t happen. And I know, it has nothing to do with him being a young black man right? I know. Race has nothing to do with it. Any cop would stand up in the middle of having a young man restrained, and pull out his weapon, and then FIRE.
Seriously. This is not the way to start out 2009.

S.Black- I don't believe anyone on the Bart just stood by and did nothing when Oscar got shot. If you've seen the video you see a huge crowd go towards the police officers when Oscar was shot. Some got threaten by officers to not come off the Bart, but some still did and where arrested.

Another thing some of the polices where trying to take Bart rides' camera phones away, but of course they were unsuccessful (thank God).

So you comment was very un-call for.

yall need to get each others back in situations like that. How do you think Oscar felt getting shot in the back by Johannes Mehserle while train loads of his peirs just looked on. You can't asume that we will be treated humanely anymore. The cop that killed Oscar, he's at home watching tv on his big screen getting paid by the department. I hope the family gets some justice, and money is only a begining.

No, the war on African-American men OR women, is not coming to an end. I voted and supported our incoming President, but I am not naive to think that PE Obama ascension is going to change shit like that, UNLESS, he is going to/and willing to publicly address this issue. As far as actually seeing a reduction and end of brutality like this ... and then put pressure on the justice department to start investigating this shit. In addition it's a State by State issue. They need to crack down on these corrupt law enforcement departments.

It's so embedded in police culture now, there needs to be a huge overhaul. Weeding out the baddies and being more selective in who they recruit and the culture they foster in law enforcement.

Hell it's early here and my thoughts our muddled, but I truly believe we have a long way to go on this issue.

Protesting is ineffective and is like yelling at a brick wall.

This is senseless and very bold of them. I will be looking for an address/phone number/e-mail, anything. Let the corrupt police of this country know that this war on the American African Male is coming to an end.
