So You Think You Can Dance X Recap: Top Eight with All Stars
Welcome back to SYTYCD! This week is extra exciting, as not only are the remaining contestants dancing with the All Stars, but the All Stars themselves are being given a chance to choreograph. Did you watch? I hope you did.
If not, we started with the burlesque house.
Yeah, that was pretty neat.
As for our bottom four: Fik-Shun and Tucker are the bottom boys and Hayley and (surprise surprise) Jenna are the bottom girls. I wonder if Jenna will magically be voted on once more, despite Nigel’s protests? All four dance solos here.
Let’s see how our All Stars did with the choreography! This week’s guest judge is Jenna Elfman.
Aaron w/Chelsie Hightower: Jive. Jive has taken out many a contestant, but not Aaron. There are a few moments where he looks surprisingly stiff, early in the lifts and a couple of times when the legs go over her head. It also looks like he misses when he’s supposed to grab and spin her at one point. But the footwork is excellent and carries him through. (Side note: is the shirt too small? Why does the button pop?)
Fik-Shun w/Allison Holker: Contemporary. It’s a serious message piece, yet he’s smiling ear to ear. Let’s not hold that against Fik. (Is it ok if I call you Fik?) Instead let’s enjoy his perfect poses. There is one lift where he really doesn’t have her and Allison wobbles fiercely, but that’s the only bad mistake in an otherwise pretty piece.
Tucker w/Courtney Galiano: Contemporary. Tucker lucked out this week and got his own style. It starts out slow and hot but when the music picks up, the dancing thankfully picks up the pace to match. It loses some of the heat and connection, but if you’re going with a face paced song, the dance should be fast paced. My big complaint is the lifts aren’t clean. You can go quick and still have each lift pose be clean. These are not.
Paul w/Comfort Fedoke: Hip Hop. Paul makes it sound like this is tough for him to attempt this style, but his dancing belies that. His training doing this show before in another country shows. That being said, this may have been his weakest showing in weeks. Comfort is so much better at this style than he is. At least this week they managed to make sure he didn’t look like the All Star.
Hayley w/Dmitry Chaplin: Rumba. Hayley is really good. Unfortunately as a personality, she’s the contestant I keep forgetting about this season. This rumba is case is point. This dance is all about Dmitry. Five minutes after it’s over, I’ve forgotten all about her, and only remember him. Jenna Elfman’s bit when she described how she could spend her whole time talking about Dmitry is telling.
Jenna w/Mark Kanemura: Jazz. Can we hire Mark to do choreo every week? This is so different, so new, so fresh! It’s exactly what this show needs ten years in. Oh, right, was Jenna in this? Sorry, I didn’t notice. Mark just left her in the dust. She wasn’t just outdanced, she was so weak in this piece she actually detracted from it.
Jasmine w/tWitch: Hip Hop. I cannot even begin to squee enough over this. Comic book nerd hip hop routine with tWitch and Jasmine. When “I’ve got the POW-WER” kicked in, I died and went to heaven. Not since Comfort have we seen someone who can really step to tWitch and hold their own. Jasmine did it without breaking a sweat.
Amy w/Travis Wall: Contemporary. Travis is the only ringer in the group, since he’s been doing choreo for the show for a few years now. But seeing him dance on the show again is such a treat. Especially with Amy, who (in my opinion) is Jasmine’s only real competition to take this season. Travis’ experience does her well here as he knows she’s supposed to be highlighted by the choreo. The two of them together are stunning.
Time for eliminations. Jenna can’t be pushed through again, can she? No. She can’t. She is out. About damn time. As for Tucker, let’s face it, he’s up against Fik-Shun. Fik isn’t going anywhere. Sorry Tucker.
Next week: The judges have it all taken out of their hands. Our Top Six perform only to learn America denied someone a spot in the finale. No more bottom four and no more saves. Either you’re in or you’re out.
