Missouri GOP: No More DMV Because…OBAMA
Missouri Republicans in the state Senate have an interesting way of showing their displeasure with Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon. It seems whenever they run across a dispute with a state agency and the boundaries of what it can and cannot do, they simply vote to eliminate state funding for the entire outfit. The problem this time around is the agency in question is the Missouri driver’s license bureau.
According to the Kansas City Star, “Missouri residents could be unable to get driver’s licenses if a funding cut passed Monday by the Missouri Senate were to ultimately become law. The elimination of funding for Missouri’s driver’s license bureau was perhaps the most dramatic proposal in a Senate budget plan full of reductions intended to grab the attention of executive branch officials accused by some senators of being uncooperative or less than forthcoming when describing how they spend state money.”
So what was this dispute about? Guess.
The article goes on to say “Republican lawmakers have asserted that people’s privacy rights have been violated by a new Department of Revenue policy intended to cut down on fraud. The procedure called for licensing clerks to make electronic copies of people’s personal documents such as birth certificates and concealed gun permits. Nixon recently ordered an end to the copying of concealed gun permits, but that has not quelled Republican frustrations.
Yep. Paranoia over OBAMA COMING FOR YOUR GUNS has reached such a fever pitch among Republicans in the state that in order to combat a fantasy problem that doesn’t exist (namely the creation of a mysterious gun registry that could of course only be used to target gun owners and bring down the wrath of the president’s personal army of jackbooted hip-hop thugs to round up firearms and their owners) that Missouri Republicans have eliminated the state’s ability to issue driver’s licenses by shutting down the entire DMV.
Let’s set aside the notion that Missouri Republicans are actually worried about the privacy rights of state citizens being abused, because they certainly have no problems going after the privacy rights of women using birth control. Let’s also set aside the notion that Missouri Republicans are worried about records fraud, public safety resulting from firearms deaths, the state of public discourse or the abuse of law enforcement for political means, as they have no problem with making the act of proposing gun control legislation a state felony.
We’re now in a situation where Republicans are willing to take basic government functions and break, dismantle, destroy, pillage and burn them to the ground using scorched earth tactics over imaginary abuses of power. They’re willing to commit actual abuses of power to do it, too. And let’s not forget that powering these insane assaults on a working state government is good old Obama Derangement Syndrome.
If there’s any good news in all this mess, it’s that in Missouri and other GOP-controlled states Republicans are engaging in public lunacy that are giving voters serious buyer’s remorse over their election to power. It also serves as a cautionary tale that Democrats have a long way to go to get the country back to sane at the state level.
