Lindsey Graham and the Boston Bombing Suspect: Clean-Up in Aisle Hypocrisy
As the door-to-door search for Boston Marathon Bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev drags on, one brave Senator had some really smart advice for law enforcement:
The last thing we may want to do is read Boston suspect Miranda Rights telling him to “remain silent.”
— Lindsey Graham (@GrahamBlog) April 19, 2013
Yes, of course — the last thing we’d want to do is to read the suspect his Miranda Rights. After all, the Fourth Amendment is just a suggestion; a guideline, really, to be ignored when it’s inconvenient, right?
Of course it is! The Constitution is super boring, anyway.
Then again, Graham wasn’t so blasé about the rule of law when he was sanctimoniously lecturing Bill Clinton’s defense team back during the Lewinsky debacle in 1998:
“If people in America follow Bill Clintonspeak, we’re going to ruin the rule of law, and he’s not worth that,” Graham said to Clinton’s lawyer, Charles Ruff, at a committee hearing on Wednesday. “No one person in America is worth trashing out the rule of law and creating a situation where you can’t rely on your common sense.”
Hey, Lindsey? You’v got a little hypocrisy on your face.
UPDATE: It’s worth noting that Lindsey Graham is a trained lawyer and a Colonel in the JAG Corps, so… yeah.
