Stronger Gun Laws Ad: What do you think?
After our broadcast of TWiB! Radio yesterday, our head engineer Aaron Rand Freeman sent me the above video. His tone was confusing because it wasn’t clear if the video was awesome or terrible or twerktastic. He seemed genuinely flummoxed. After watching this myself I don’t know how I feel about it myself.
On one hand, I agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly. It’s something we’ve said ever since the gun debate took center stage again. It is an absolute fact that when the 2nd amendment was written we couldn’t kill 80 people in 45 seconds. And even if you believe that the Founding Fathers thought process was absolutely perfect and that they themselves were infallible–you’d also have to believe that they had access to a Tardis or a DeLorean to be able to know then what we’d have right now.
But I did have an “Oh my God!” moment as I was watching it. Perhaps it’s because I wasn’t expecting it. Perhaps the idea of a guy walking into a building and firing is a little too close to home. Maybe angry-looking white guys carrying guns in office spaces strikes a chord in my soul. Whatever it was I was a bit on edge.
And maybe that’s exactly what people need to realize that something has to happen.
Today the Senate will vote to expand background checks for gun purchases and as of 9am EST they don’t have the votes. Perhaps we need to send them this video. My fear is they’d explain that if the secretary of the office was packing then she could have stopped this guy.
