While I’m Busy Wringing My Hands …
Which prompts two thoughts: (a) Why do I bother over-analyzing my own writing on the subject of race; and (2) as long as this shit still happens on a regular basis, don’t tell me I’m too indulgent of the country’s first Black president. Because yes, I’m going to defend him. Fiercely, even. As long as douche-baggery like this exists.
Okay, calm down. I’m not saying you can’t criticize the President just because idiots like Kyle Rogers tweet racist crap; nor am I saying that criticism of the President – from the right or the left – is, a priori, racist. Hell, I’ve criticized the President myself. I disagree with him over the “war on terror,” for example. That’s kind of a major issue.
But I’m never not going to be cognizant of the real racism Pres. Obama faces on a daily basis. Ever. Nor should any thinking person, whether they support the President or not.
Racist knuckleheads like Kyle Rogers aren’t some narrow exception to the rule; they’re everywhere. In fact, they’re way more common than anybody wants to admit. They only fly under the radar because they’re generally too cowardly to say their most racist thoughts aloud. So it’s easy to pretend that there aren’t many real racists left, and that the President’s harshest critics really aren’t racist after all.
Yes, I know. Rogers’ comment wasn’t directed at Pres. Obama. Never fear, though. You don’t have to stroll too far down his Twitter stream to find gems like this:
Look at all the people who look like they could be Obama’s son. #WhitePeopleThoughtsInTheHood

So, yeah, it’s all connected.
Anyway, this is America in 2013, people. Let’s stop pretending that we’re so much better than this.
