  1. Hey, where did today’s show go? I was listening on iTunes, on my phone while I was cooking dinner (Pacific time – I almost never get to listen live), and it just disappeared about half-way through. I come here later to see I can get it straight from TWiB.net, and I get 404 errors.

    • Elon,
Of course happiness comes from within as does death by starvation, water pollution borne diseases et al.
Weren’t you missing the point of ‘happiness day’
I think Ban Kee Moon had a LOT more in mind than consumerist motivated satisfaction or Buddhist precepts of ‘first control your desires.’

My view is we (homo sapiens) need to get our priorities right and focus on what we share rather than phenotype, cultural, religious, national differences. The latter are artificial… human creations not ABSOLUTES and the former is circumstantial (a product of the environment and it’s ultimate effect on genetic expressions).
Your arguments smacked of American (exceptionalism) justification/ bias. i.e. we are “entitled”(sic?) to ignore the plight of others or subjugate those who aren’t us while we as individuals strive for the upper levels of Maslow’s “hierarchy of needs” with impunity to it’s consequences.
I’m fairly certain BKM was referring to the amongst other things the gigantic disparity between the rich nations and the poor… Make no bones about it American style Capitalism is BASED on *exploitation* if not it’s blacks, those whites lacking in power or illegal(hmm?) Hispanics it’s everybody else.
Consider the very lucrative Freeport Copper mine in West Papua and the consequences.

US support for Illegal settlements on Palestinian land and the apartheid nature of Israel …look at the obscene disparity in water distribution in Palestinian cities and Swimming pool green lawn luxury of the up stream illegal settlements.
My point is America is far from a force for good but just a force for it’s own benefit. No America isn’t THE GREAT SATAN but as Dr Samuel Johnson said
“nationalism is last (first my view) refuge of a scoundrel”. I interpret this to mean that if an (series of actions) can only be justified by nationalism then look for the scoundrel who benefits making sure it’s not you.
People in the west are so selfishly myopic that they need to heed MLK jr’s words ” nothing in the world is more Dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity”.
Before we get self congratulatory about our comparative opulence consider the misery that comes from no food, clean water and no hope of more than half the world’s population. If we feel 20 million in Israel/Palestine is a political powder keg, Consider coal reefs they are dying (AGW) as are the species of edible sea food that depend on them. Now ask your self what is going to happen to the 5-600 MILLION ( that’s addition to the 3 billion mentioned before) people whose existence depends on these resources.
I think BKM is more concerned about the bigger picture of what constitutes ‘happiness’ (aka survival and hope)
and the western anosegnosia that is causing aggravating it .
Damn I’ve got splinters from my soap box …sorry but I think it needs to be said.
