Our country’s issue with diabetes is driving up the cost of medical services. We question whether it is preventable. A bee’s venomous sting allows for a major breakthrough in HIV research. Utah wants to solve its firearm suicide problem but loosening gun laws. You won’t want to miss this episode!

  1. Elon,
Point taken. About the energy level. There has to be a balance.

    Notwithstanding a great show

On diabetes, one of the issues that needs attention is that what is often missed by the public is the Cost of the loss of productivity to the economy BECAUSE of the effects of diabetes. Consider also the fact that many diabetics can’t continue working due to the effects.
It is an enormous drain on the economy.
What one mustn’t forget is the causes and corporations’/ capitalists’ deliberate myopic views simply because it’s a profit centre. Keep the people ignorant to things like good/ balanced nutrition etc.

War story warning: As a I remember organizing on behalf of a business community service club a series of basic cooking/nutrition classes for poor teen single mums, young women. It started off with 10 girls 1X 3hrs once a week for 6 weeks free of charge to them. And finished up with 200 students and running for two years including specially written books. In the end the Electricity supplier/retailer took it over as ‘community service’
However, when we started it was from a limited geographical area and at the local high school at night. Sadly the local Fast food outlets complained and started an acrimonious campaign targeting members of the community service club claiming it (the course) was adversely effecting their businesses.
As Chomsky says Business wants the public to be dumb/ill informed and compliant so they will believe the Advertising and sell more. Regardless of the consequences.

Many of the girls that came to my attention couldn’t cook for their babies or knew what was nutritious. i.e. if it didn’t come in a can or from a fast food franchise they literally didn’t know what to do with it. They believed that hamburgers were nutritious for children as a staple food “they have meat and vegetables…they wouldn’t be able to sell them as children’s meals if they weren’t healthy, would they? !! ”
Treat makers don’t care they simply want to sell more, if the cost of covering sick workers increase simply put up the price of the product…some doctors don’t care they have in diabetes sufferers a ‘captive’ market …. what ever price the market will bear….. Drug companies make more money and profit from selling meds and diet pills to the western world that they would actually curing some of the curable 3rd world diseases or um poverty in equity ( not equality) at home.

Note in that it is in businesses interest to have ignorant consumers hence the school system. Dumb citizens can demand less wages etc. Keep in mind the largest recurrent cost of most businesses is the wage bill.
    Just a thought or two

    • Ps the problem is that we all see the world in terms of everything is a commodity that is automatically subject to competition and market forces (life is a commodity that can be bought and sold including at the extremes various forms of slavery.
