Rand Paul Filibuster

Rand Paul Filibuster

On this episode of @amTWIB: is the Rand Paul filibuster a smoke screen?

The Rand Paul filibuster seems to have made him a darling in both conservative and progressive circles, but is there more to it?  Also on today’s #amTWIB:

  • Arizona governor Jan Brewer pleads with her own party to reconsider expansion of Medicaid.
  • a Canadian  study that claims Mother Theresa’s humanitarian image is a lie.
  • L. Joy outlines a new method of curing migraines.

Don’t miss this episode!

Featuring: Ljoy Williams, Nichelle Stephens, Aaron Rand Freeman, and Elon James Whites

  1. I would have to disagree with Elon about Rand Paul. I think it is possible to say I agree with him on this issue but i don’t agree with him on everything (anything) else. Al Sharpton and Newt Gingrich went on an Education Tour together and I’m pretty sure at the time they didn’t agree on much else (and later they stopped agreeing on how to reform our education system). There are common grounds you can come to. Maybe #StandwithPaul is a bit much but showing support for someone speaking out against something you agree with them on doesn’t mean you co-sign everything they say or every position they take. I also don’t believe he is speaking cynically since he and Ron Paul has always been against war (mostly because they don’t want any engagement with the world) but I can agree and say I like your position on war, I don’t like the next step you make with disengaging entirely with the world. I don’t like Rand or Ron Paul at all but I don’t agree with the drone policy so I would have to say…begrudgingly…I actually agree with Rand Paul on something. I believe that is part of the definition of nuance.

  2. I just wanted to write in again and say thank you to Elon for addressing my comment on TWiB Radio. After listening to your response to it I think I will have to take back my comment earlier. I appreciate dialog which is one of the reasons I truly enjoy your shows. Hyping up Rand Paul for saying one non-douchey thing is not the correct action to take. Perhaps Sen. Ron Wyden would have been a better person to use as an example of someone seriously addressing the issue of drones. Anyways, thanks for addressing my comment and leading me towards the light.

P.S. I actually really don’t like Rand Paul (and his perm. I deal with a lot of Libertarians so I should have known better.

  3. Hi Ladies, Ljoy, Nichelle and of course Aaron
Love your input into Twib AM
    It both reasoned and interesting.

With regards to the story about the life guard and the 4 YO without a top at the public baths.
I tend to agree with Aaron in that it is wise with technology today it’s wise to be more on the protective stage than laise fair . Literature I’ve read from Security Conferences that there has been recent busts of Paedophilia porn groups where photo shopped pictures of unsuspecting little girls have appeared . Simply put Pictures of children at beaches, taken in back yards naked running in the sprinkler etc. These photos may end up anywhere. The problem is that if these pornographically enhanced pictures show up some years later.

If I were the pool management I would be concerned about liability if such shots were taken at the pool. With technology today I am not able to police the potential photographer but I can restrict the targets.
Notwithstanding, I would have taken the issue to the mother not the child.

Regarding frisking. I would like to suggest that the policy isn’t racist although the individual police person may abuse it.
I have read enough to be aware that in the 1930-40 some completely white areas had ‘a street crime issue’ in those day the drug dealers, burglars , street violence were perceived to be and probably were largely the white ‘youth’ .The response at the time were ‘Blamey’s bashers’ . These were police who trawled the streets at night looking for suspicious youths , they would stop challenge them and with the modicum of provocation they’d hand out a good old fashion whooping. The idea was that ‘good kids ‘ would be at home…. and by targeting the reprobate youth knock some sense into them and discourage street crime.

Not so long ago NYC had a no tolerance for street crime so the police hassled the street hustlers prostitutes, pan handlers etc. In one sense it moved the crime.
Now in the area where this frisking takes place the vast majority of the faces are Black or Hispanic, likewise most of the active gangs are too. Given the above examples it’s not surprising that to the youth being frisked it appears to be a racist policy.

That doesn’t mean that I agree with , condone the police methodology.
There is no doubt in my mind the problem is largely poverty and lack of real opportunity. And street violence is a symptom there of.

Having said that the police are between a rock and a hard place with regards to finance and the political nature of the police commissioner to wit his priority are set by politicians.
The reality is that the greatest number of city tax payers are those with both money and opportunity and they demand their interests be attended to first. In real term people aren’t inherently bad as white says ( no offence to his street ceds [wisdom]) but recent literature has shown that much of the aggression, greed, etc is Culturally conditioned in that it encourages these endemic instincts to express in this way. There has be a number of ‘greed tests’ done on “Primitive people” only to find these “instincts” are all but absent.
I would also argue that ‘racial profiling’ is a misnomer in reality it is simply the western culture to blame someone else and usually the most obvious different.

Consider this, Given my step daddy was a son of the south, Carolina that is. I on the other had was an adopted child of a refugee . Now if we imagine I was white and got lost after dark in some of the streets in Brooklyn dressed in my usual business suit. How long do you think it would be before I was singled out as whitie for mugging? Now if I spoke with my daddy’s ascent, deep South any bet about the instant view that I was a southern racist?

Ask your self how many of the good black folks would come down and offer me help because I am like a neon sign saying “white meat …Mug me” in an empty paddock? How many would come to my rescue? Or would they look out their windows and run a book on how may houses I could pass before being mugged? Besides I deserve it anyway because I’m southern white and dumb.
In point of fact While my adopted dad was as billed my adopted mom is an Aussie. I have lived in SC but most of my life I’ve travelled and currently live(d) in Aust. The final perspective fact is that much of my formative years we were in PNG and I grew up between 3 cultures. As such I don’t really belong to any and view all cultures as different, not better, not worse, just different.

    PS
    Elon,
I note that every show you’re in you mention that you’re the boss… . Let the other shine too. Time your self, I did. Oh yes no more *hypocritical criticism * about frat humor given your part in…. woman and dog, C…. pistol… et al Or I’ll organize a plague of Dolphins and Porpoises to pursue you every where and all you will hear is Eaiiich ! Which is dolphin for No ! Just stop.

Now that I’m banned Thanks for the entertainment and to hell with the fish
    PPS
The meaning of life is now 69 ….inflation!

    • Hi E.A. I’m not sure what you mean. We often joke about our roles with in TWiB and either play it up or play it down but I hope the whole “like a bawse” joke doesn’t make you think that I’m some how flexing from a position of power. As for “hypocritical criticism” I’d argue that my “part in” the #afterblack conversation wasn’t based in frat humor at all. My entire point was that an animal can’t consent to some sort of sexual relationship. As for #CoochPistol, are you implying that questioning the validity of a report and language used equals frat humor? Is it based on the idea that something might be off color or what the industry refers to as “Blue” jokes? Frat humor is a very specific style of humor that I’d argue I simply don’t qualify as. Now if you’re arguing that if I make a dirty joke that I no longer can question other types of jokes I at least understand your point and simply disagree.

No banning here. I’d hope that by this point it’s clear that I can take a critique with out dropping the hammer. That’s how bawses do. ;-)

      • Elon,
much of the PS was largely tongue in cheek and light hearted comment.
I saw the joke but like yo say. say something often enough and it becomes a tar brush add to that you do over power/talk the girls a bit. Ljoy and Nichelle are the hosts of the show and they have some interesting points.
Sometimes it’s hard to create something and stand back a bit.
The Frat humor bit was definitely a troll at you criticising frat humor and yet the treatment of both the stories was in Frat humor orientation. No bad!
As for the ‘banning’ well you may note that a signature trait of mine is when I’ve been heavy, serious , critical I tend to add some self deprecation to indicate I don’t take my self ‘that’ serious . As I say “the more I know the more I know that I don’t know” ergo absolutes bother me i.e. I could be wrong…
Hence the rest of the post is ‘other’ factors.

P.S. Tell Dacia I now understand that “I’m a premature Old Black Man” and preteen and then teenagers do it every time :-(

  4. PS Gang
ABWC has a good article about the Rand Paul topic.

Aaron Have you considered legal action against Rand Paul for trashing your middle name?

    • I’m making it my business to elevate the profile of the name ‘Rand’ so at some point I can simply charge Rand Paul for doing him a service.

  5. Thanks for crushing my excuse for not having sex when I am not in the mood. Now when “I say I have a headache” he will reply “oh I got something for that.” Then he will start beatboxing like Elon when talking about “sexy time.” Lol, I love the show. I listen to all 700,000 shows. Keep up the good work.

  6. I had the same thought as you in regards to why would they kill the lion for being a lion. However, after hearing further reports, that was the only way the authorities were able to get to the victim, they had to kill the lion.
