It’s the State of the Union! And the Union is Drunk.
Game on, boyfriend.
It’s Blacky O’s fifth state of the union address tonight, and the state of the union is… drunk. I mean, Ted Nugent? Really, GOP?
I, of course, will be live-tweeting it, as I’m sure my comrades in Angry will (I’m looking at you, asiangrrlMN.)
Expect a lot of talk about the middle class, the economy, the budget, gun control — and about immigration (which, apparently everybody loves until President Obama attaches his name to it. Seriously. They did a poll and everything — Republican support for comprehensive immigration reform drops from 60 percent to 39 percent once President Obama endorses it, according to a new Washington Post poll. This should come as no surprise to you, unless you’ve been trapped under something heavy with your eyes and ears glued shut for the past four years.)
Expect Rand Paul, who is giving the Tea Party response (a gimmick popularized by a glassy-eyed and gazing-into-the-distance Michele Bachmann in 2011), to be about as exciting as fried fish in a cul de sac. (I don’t know what that means, I just made it up.)
It’s cute how the Tea Party thinks it’s still relevant, isn’t it?
Annnnnyway, tonight should be fun. And by fun, I mean drunk. (Just like the state of our union! See how it all comes full circle?)
It’s been a while since we’ve gathered ’round and drank to our President, Internet. So let’s do this. (And here’s a drinking game for those of you who are inclined to engage in such shenanigans.)
And fresh from my inbox, here are some excerpts from President Obama’s address:
“It is our generation’s task, then, to reignite the true engine of America’s economic growth – a rising, thriving middle class.
It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country – the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or who you love.
It is our unfinished task to make sure that this government works on behalf of the many, and not just the few; that it encourages free enterprise, rewards individual initiative, and opens the doors of opportunity to every child across this great nation of ours.”
“A growing economy that creates good, middle-class jobs – that must be the North Star that guides our efforts. Every day, we should ask ourselves three questions as a nation: How do we attract more jobs to our shores? How do we equip our people with the skills needed to do those jobs? And how do we make sure that hard work leads to a decent living?”
“Tonight, I’ll lay out additional proposals that are fully paid for and fully consistent with the budget framework both parties agreed to just 18 months ago. Let me repeat – nothing I’m proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime. It’s not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government that sets priorities and invests in broad-based growth.”
Bottoms up, America!
