Vagina is bad says Republican

Yes this is the year 2012:

VIA TPM

Michigan House Republicans blocked a state representative from speaking on the floor on Thursday after she referenced certain parts of female anatomy in a speech on an abortion bill.

“Finally, Mr. Speaker, I’m flattered that you’re all so interested in my vagina, but ‘no’ means ‘no,’” Rep. Lisa Brown (D) said to cap her remarks in which she expressed stark opposition to a series of bills regulating abortion, including one that would ban the procedure after 20 weeks unless the woman’s life was in danger, according to #ixzz1xo4Jkhry" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://www.detroitnews.com']);">The Detroit News.

House Republicans called the remarks over the line and barred her from participating in a subsequent debate on education.

“It was so offensive, I don’t even want to say it in front of women,” one state representative said. “I would not say that in mixed company.”

My initial response was to just type HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA for three paragraphs but that would be considered mocking. I mean I guess we have to understand that the word vagina is a terrible word that is scary to many and just flat out dirty. It does all those dirty things that upstanding citizens frown at. I MEAN COME ON. IT’S VAGINA. This post is now flagged in 38 states because I mentioned it. Next thing you know I’ll say something like uterus or fallopian tubes.

Dear GOP. Just because you can’t say it doesn’t mean you can legislate it. The fact that Democrats are having a  problem against folks like this is astounding.

    • Baby.

    • Baby.

I don’t mean to be facetious, but when we minimize the concerns about abortion, I think we cheapen our arguments.  To a pro-lifer, this issue is not necessarily about a woman’s sexuality, but about the unborn baby they believe is being killed.

  1. It wasn’t about saying the word
VAGINA, she used it in an offensive manner. Almost any word can be used in such a way, she was being vulgar and deserved to be put in a time out for being naughty. I am also completely serious.I also side with them on this too, it’s about time they got these damn vaginas under control.

    • Could you explain to me how her usage of the word #vagina was vulgar? Was it that she took ownership of her own?

      • I can’t believe I’m about to defend a Republican idea, but here goes…

Yes. Partly because she took ownership. Partly because she used it ironically and in jest, however righteously indignant she should be about a bill that violates her body.

Where she went wrong was insinuating that they were interested in her vagina. She sexualized it. She indicated they wanted her.

Is it enough to warrant banning? According to their 19th century thought process, yes.

        • Not just that. Her use of “no means no” implies they were insistently attempting to (date)rape her vagina. Witty? Sorta.

  2. ‘my vagina’ is vulgar? I have a body part, I use the clinically correct term for it to reference it during a debate where a governing body is legislating that all women, including the me, may not ask a medical practitioner to perform a medical procedure through said body part?

If you are meaning she was ‘personalizing’ it… that’s what legislators who want to make a ethical point do… they personalize it…. ‘You’, yes, you, not ‘the state’ not ‘the people’ but ‘You’ are discussing legislation that disallows ‘me’ a fertile (I assume, speaking for her) woman and resident of this state, procedures that pass through ‘my’ body.

Vulgar is when 5 men, at least one celibate, are presented as ‘experts’ discussing women’s birth control in front of the US Congress.

Next it will be ‘nipple’ or ‘breast’ or heaven forbid… ‘testicle’ or ‘prostate.’

Grow up Michigan Legislature… These are important times, and it’s time for you grow a pair, and not be embarrased by college anatomy words.

  3. They have lost their damn minds in MI.
look for this type of mess to spread across the country.

  4. This is ridiculous. If you want an apology, then ask for one. The absolute last resort should be to silence an elected representative. If it was so bad why could they replay it on the news?

  5. What about the father’s rights in this sort of situation? It takes two people to make a baby.

What about the unborn child’s rights?

I think it is more then fair to set a certain standard when it comes to abortion. There shouldn’t be an issue with having accountability when it comes to these sorts of things.

It’s not just about you or your body anymore when you become pregnant, you give up those rights as there are other people involved now.

Abortions have their place and I am not for out right banning them, but I am totally for imposing perfectly reasonable limitations on them. They shouldn’t be treated as if they were something casual.
