Tavis Smiley Gets Uninvited To Speak. Hard.
PEORIA —Tavis Smiley is out as speaker for the annual Martin Luther King luncheon Jan. 16 at Peoria Civic Center. Michael Eric Dyson is in, tentatively.
Public Employees for Community Concerns, the city of Peoria employee group that sponsors the luncheon, canceled the contract with Smiley on Wednesday amid growing concerns about a backlash to his appearance.
Following a local book club’s public pronouncement of its decision to boycott Smiley because of his criticisms of President Barack Obama, the local NAACP and a private family group also asked for refunds on tickets purchased for tables of 10.
Oh dear. Apparently The Travis Bus Tour of Hate didn’t go over so well with lots of people. Travis and Waldorf ran around the country with a lot of hurt feelings and some how thought that their standing within the Black community would make the immune to being called out on their hater-aid. That was far from the case. I would love to see more groups speak out against the dynamic duo’s “Obama didn’t love me enough” commentary. With Travis being so worried about all the poverty that’s so abundant now during this particular presidents administration, I wonder was he going to hand over that 37,000 dollar paycheck he was getting to try to sound smart while not saying too much to the poor. Doubt it.*
I’m not going to say anything about them replacing Travis with Michael Eric Dyson. I’ve had words for him in the past but he seems to be attempting to be reasonable lately. As long as Dyson doesn’t some how compare Dr. King to T.I. or come up with some ludicrous metaphor involving whatever Drake’s eye brows and the state of America today it should be fine.
Actually I’d love to hear that speech.
*Full disclosure. I’m not a fan of Travis Smiley. Perhaps you could tell since I keep referring to him as Travis Smiley.
